Jean Widmer Award

For an article in the social sciences published by a young researcher

The Jean Widmer Award, presented by the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and consisting of CHF 5,000, recognizes an article in the social sciences published by a young researcher, that makes a significant contribution to the study of communication and the public sphere.


Eligibility criteria

  1. The nominee must have published a high-quality article, in a scientific publication such as a review, journal or book, which makes a significant contribution to the study of communication and the public sphere.
  2. The nominee is working on a substantial scientific project and is pursuing an academic career. The nominee must have been 40 years of age or under on the publication date of the article submitted for the award. An exception to this age limit may be granted if the nominee completed his or her studies at a non-traditional age or experienced unavoidable delays in his or her scientific career (due to family responsibilities or illness).
  3. The article is written in French, German, English or Spanish.
  4. The article submitted for the award must have been published in the three calendar years preceding the presentation of the award (2009-2011).
  5. In the event that he or she is selected for the award, the nominee agrees to accept it in person at the University of Fribourg.
  6. In the case of an article with more than one author, the award's regulations apply to all the authors.


Review of nominations and presentation of the award

The Jean Widmer Award Committee reviews the nominations and selects the recipient. The recipient is personally informed by the Committee. The award will be presented to the recipient at a public ceremony to be held at the University of Fribourg in November 2012.

Nomination procedure
The nominee or a nominator sends a dossier including the published version of the article being submitted for the award, a letter presenting the article and its author, and the author’s curriculum vitae specifying his or her date of birth and contact information. Only complete dossiers will be taken into consideration.

The nomination deadline is March 15, 2012 (latest date of the postmark).
